Compositeur des musiques de film de son ami Luc Besson, Eric Serra utilise souvent les synthétiseurs avec des instruments acoustiques. De nombreux thèmes sont soit exclusivement symphoniques, soit presque synthétiques. Certains albums sortis à la suite d' un film sont embellis par une ou deux chansons. Le succés du film de Luc Besson "Le Grand Bleu" a révélé au public la musique à l' époque plus synthétique d' Eric Serra.

Après "le 5ème élément" et son album solo "RXRA", E. Serra a réalisé depuis la B.O. du dernier film de L. Besson "Jeanne d' Arc".
