The Târnaveni Hospital in Romania celebrates 100 years. Built in 1897 it has officially been inaugurated on April 11, 1898. Beginning with only 40 beds, this hospital became before the First World War one of the largest hospital in South Eastern Europe.
Some Historical Data related to the hospital :
Dr. Moise Szöcs was the first
director of the hospital from 1899 to 1930. During his activity the medical activity is extended and new sections
are opened : the neuropsychiatric department, the contagious section, the laboratories. During and after the First
World War the hospital passed through difficult moments as a direct consequence of the general economic situation.
Dr. Ioan Dumitrescu begins his activity at the
Târnaveni hospital as a primary surgeon in 1925. Formed at the French medical school, having been the surgeon
of the Royal Regiment during the First World War and honored for his merits by Romanian and French military distinctions,
Dr. Ioan Dumitrescu becomes the director of the hospital in 1930, after Dr. Szöcs's retirement, until 1946.
During this period, the hospital is completely reorganized. New buildings are constructed. The hospital disposes
now of qualified medical personnel adequate to its new development strategy. The hospital also becomes a scientific
center attracting prestigious scientific personalities internationally recognized who will constantly come here
and contribute to consolidate its reputation.
Some Scientific Personalities related to the hospital
Prof. Dr. Gheorghe Marinescu is one of the founder
of modern neurology, internationally known for his scientific merits. Professor of neurology at the University
of Bucharest, he published about 2,000 papers and books concerning his contributions in the study of the physiological
mechanism of speech and its troubles, the senescence mechanisms, the traumatic nevroses, the nature and the treatment
of general progressive paralysis, the biology of the nervous cell, the study of hypnotism. For more information

Prof. Dr. I.C. Parhon is one of the founders of
modern endocrinology. He is the author of the first treaty dedicated to scientific endocrinology. He studied the
mechanisms of neuro-endocrinian interconnections, the complex function of the thyroid gland and the biochemical
phenomena involved into humoral regulation phenomena.
Prof. Dr. I. Jianu was a surgeon, well-knwon through his
contributions concerning the tissues and organs transplants and through his original techniques applied in vascular
surgery. Jianu is one of the pioneers of the ultra-sonic techniques applied in the treatment of kidneys lithiasis.
Some Historical Events related to the hospital :
- During the Second World War, from 1940 to 1944, the Târnaveni
Hospital continuing its activity is affected to receive and treat the war wounded soldiers. The lives of thousand
of soldiers were saved here.
- During 1945-46 the hospital due to the war evolution, found itself on the front line, under the crossed artillery firing. The hospital personnel honored their mission with courage and high responsibility.
This page is a homage in the memory of the personnel of the Târnaveni Hospital, for their
professional and moral devotion under extremely difficult conditions. These courageous women and men do not belong
anymore to this life. Yet this page may be an example for the next generations.
