Axe Killer was one of the most active record company in the 80's. this label released bands like Hawaï , Black Task, Dark angel, & tons more. But at the end of the 80's, Axe killer stops its activities. In 1997, they're back & they prove that they've lost nothing of their talent to find new & promising artist.
At first, they begin with re-release of their last albums in Cd format;
they also proposes some surprising re release such as Sortilege, H Bomb,
that has become cult french metal band!

Oubliez
donc les multi-platines, "Slip of the tongue" et autres bluettes FMisantes
d'un "Fool for your loving no more", d'un "Blindman" ou du titre éponyme.

des divins ""in trance, "Polar Nghts", Fly to the rainbow", autant d'úuvres
rythmique bouillonnantes ("Hell Cat", "Robot man", "Speedy's coming") en
On bénit

Car

a marqué l'histoire du hard, The Lords of the new church n'a pourtant
rien à voir avec notre musique préférée. Etrange
non ?
Girl white girl"), The Lords of The new Church, c'est d'abord un état
d'esprit, un peu Punk ou New Wave. Cette compil est l'occasion de redécouvrir
EVIL / SORTILEGE
Split Albums : Evil's Message / sortilege - Style : Speed metal / Heavy metal
2 cult EPís on one CD. Of course, you
can say, itís another reissue of teh french debut EP of Sortilege. But
this new version contains a bonus track, which comes from a rare demo tape.
If you donít know Sortilege, you can imagine the french Judas / Queensryche.
Teh pwoerful side of the first one & the technical level & originality
of the second. To date, Sortilege is still a cult band, with one of the
most incredible singer on earth !
Evil gets few luck. The band only released this EP. Issued originally in 83, « Evilís message » was the european answer to Metallica ! 5 speed metal hymns with a better productin than « Killíem all ». So, if youíre septic about this album, you know now that itís primary interst is to reveal to all metal fans 2 cult band that released must have EPís in the 80ís.
Albums : Break Out - Style : Heavy metal
Strange choice ! Axe Killer decided to reissue
the second Fiscís LP, but not the first. Probably a problem to recover
master tapes. Fisc was a frch top metal band. They started in the mid 80ís
with a well known singer Andre Balzer (Atoll). On « break Out »,
Fisc wanted to make a step forward USAís conquest. By that time, the sound
was really good, now it sounds a little bit old, but itís normal. «
break out » contains very good heavy metal riffs with strong melodies.
Thier new singer has a « hot » voice. With a good ballad «
Across a crowded room », Fisc was definitly ready to start its Us
carreer. Remember, they released 2 other albums & at this time, Fisc
was described as the french Def Leppard. So, ready to headbang with meatl
ymns like TNT, Running through the night or Fire eyes lady ?
Albums : Giuffra - Style : Hard FM
This is the reissue of this top hard FM album released in the beginning of the 80ís. giuffra is teh band created by Greg Giuffra. Later, Greg will create anotehr succesful bands : House of Lords (reissued too by Axe killer). The interest of this album is to show all the evolution between his debut to success. Giuffra is not a bad album, but itís not the best songs composed by Giuffra. For a debut album, it was really appreciated, but Greg Giuffra was really at his best a few years later. If you want to discover the debut of Hard FM, this album is probably the one that allowed bon Jovi & co to make thier carreer.
Albums : Shrinking violet - Style : Hard rock
La Guns is back ! ! nobody could expect it
but it happens ! Axe Killer is behind this come back & this new album
is a new step forward La Gunsí carreer. With Jizzy Pearl on vocals, Lizzy
Guns & his band really kicks ass during the 12 rock bombs played here.
With a first class production, completly natural, La Guns is back to the
rockíníroll roots. this sounds really refreshing & totally welcome.
« Shrinking violet » also means the defintive death of the
Album : Operation Mindcrime
/ Queen of the reich - Style : Heavy metal
Do I have really to introduce this band ? & this album ? Operation Mindcrime is the best Heavy metal concept to date. 10 years after its release, it still sounds modern. This reissue of one of the most important record of the century is made by the french company Axe Killer. Of course, everybody gets the original version in LP, MC or CD. But this one is a double Cd set presented in special edition : a digibook, with new photos, .... It contains the worldwide famous "Operation Mindcrime" + teh debut "Queen of the reich". The new booklet contains all lyrics, new pics, ...This « collector de luxe » is released at only a few copies. So, only the die hard fans would probably have the possibility of buying it. The other one will surely damn themselves, Ďcos only the fastest will get this album. Itís just an absolute priority & the ideal Xmas gift for any Heavy metal fans.
Albums : Ratt - Style
: Heavy rock
Contact : www.therattpack.com
99 is the year of reunion for all 80ís major bands : Motley Crue (original line up), Kiss, Maiden, Great White, ... Ratt is back too ! After several top heavy rock albums, Ratt finally splitted up, but the recent interest given on heavy rock is a reason for Ratt to be back. This new Ratt shows anew face into their music. Less commercial & more mature, Ratt has ow become a more efficient band. The sound is more naturla too. The unique voice of Stephen Pearcy & the genuine guitar style of Warren de Martini. Ratt means definitly the end of the sophisticated Rattís touch & a new departure.
Albums : Sven Gali - Style : Heavy rock
This is the canadian answer of Skidrow ! Sven Gali is prodigious. This album is really astonishing. Excellent melodies, powerful guitars parts, strong musicianship, first class production. Nothing can be better on this album. From its beginnign to its end, Sven gali gives pure pleasure to all metal & to all rock fans. This is this kind of album that proves how much indispensable is heavy rock & how much crap is grunge. If you want to get real good time with one of the best bands, try this one.
Album live : Live at the Key club - - Style : Heavy rock
After a few years of silence, Cinderella is back with a live album recorded in California during a west coast tour with Great White & Poison. The band started its carrer in 1983 & released three excellent albums : Nightsong, Long cold winter & Heartbreak station. Their latest studio album , Still climbing" was really more different from what Cinderella used to do before. But now, the band is really back to its golden years with this live album which contains the most classical stuffs composed by Cinderella. The sound is really impressive (especially the drums sound which sounds very pure). Tom Kiefer has still this characteristic voice, sort of melodic Brian Johnson. All Cinderella's hits are played, from "Push, Push", "shake me", "nightsongs", "heartbreak station", "coming home", "the more things change" & even more. More than a classical glam rock or heavy rock band, Cinderella is a rock band with some blues /country influences. This live album show what were lacking to this band : it sounds more deeper than in the studio version. Of course, Cinderella makes us think about AC/DC ("Hot & bothered", ..) but with a more commercial attitude like the backing vocals led by female singers. So, if you know Cinderella a bit, this album is really the best one to discover the true personality of this out of common band, 'cos it's really impossible to stay insensible during these 16 songs.
Album : Hungry - - Style : Heavy rock
After the reissue of their first albums, Axe Killer offers us the first European version of "hungry" of the Us heavy rock band XYZ. Originally issued by EMI in 1991, this album is totally remastered & it now includes a bonus track. This album reveals how good was this band whose only fault is to have appeared in the 90's which were the grunge years. So, 10 years later, it's a real luck to discover it again. Songs are still very good despite the years. The band had make a great work on composition. From heavy hymns like "Fire & water" to some good ballads" when I finds love", XYZ can unite fans of both White Lion & Motley Crue.
Style Hard rock- Album : Great Zeppelin - A tribute to Led Zeppelin
'Great Zeppelin 'is the title of the new album of GreatWhite, the famous American band. But this album is some special because it 's also a live album & especially a tribute to Led Zeppelin, one of the precursors of the hard rock scene and one of the main influence of Great White. The task could have appearred arduous but Great Whitemakes itt with honors. Standards of Led Zeppelin are covered with a great talent and a mastery that testify the technical level of the musicians . Irreproachable , this live album, recorded in December 1996 and available in a luxe version is a testimony and a homage to the rock 'n' roll played by Led Zeppelin. Jack Russell confirms furthermore his scenic affluence. We all knew him as very skilled but he complety atonished r me by his capacities to sing to the perfection titles as 'Stairway to heaven 'or 'No quarter ». And when the band get into a blues as on the magnificent 'Since I've been losing you », a great shiver covers our spine. Led Zeppelin was indeed a great group but Great White demonstrates with brio and great class that it stays too as one of the most interessant band of the s American heavy rock scene. Only available on Axe Killer records, this album is essential to all those that adore Led eppelin, Great White or very good rock'n roll in general.
Album : Gallery - Style : Heavy rock / blues
Monster of the 80's heavy rock scene, the multi-platine Great White
suffered a lot from the grunge wave. They recently renewed with the fantastic
Led zeppelin live tribute album released too by Axe Killer. Great White
never splitted up but knew a more confidential sucess nowadays. So, Axe
Killer works for the renaissance of this top us band by releasing a sampler
of the best Great White songs. The main difference with other samplers
that can be issued, is that this one contains the best songs of Great White
& not only their hit-titles. This album contains 14 tracks from 1984
to 1992. It appears obviously that Great White was really more than an
heavy rock band. With strong blues influences, the music of this band is
really deeper ("Rock me"). Jack Russell is undoubtly one of the best voice
for this style of music. & with great guitar works, this sampler shows
the range of this band.
Albums : Stick it - Style : Heavy rock
This is not a new Great White. Itís «
only » the reissue of their first album. Totally remastered, with
5 bonus tracks & in limited deluxe edition, « Stick it »
shows teh debut on album for on eof the most incredible ehavy rock bands
of the 80ís. Still inlife, Great white is really more than all the glam
or false heavy rock bands of the 80ís US scene. With a solid rockíní roll
background, with a large influence from Led Zeppelin (hear the voice !),
Great white has really something more. Some blues influences here &
there remains us the integrity of the most underestimated band in the USA.
Maybe a new start for them !
Albums : Can't get there from there - Style : Heavy rock
On their new album, Great White is back to
its roots. Less heavy more rock, this album sounds even more mature, more
nautral & more personnal. Great White has nothing more to prove into
the rock scene. Itís one of the most reputed band worldwide. So, this time,
Great white has decided to record what they prefer. The pleasure the get
to play these songs is the pleasure we get to listen to it. Between true
& fundamental rock songs & ballads, Great White has built a new
step to an acclaimed carrer. Absolutly indsipensable !
Album : Psycho city
- Style : Heavy rock
Rate of satisfaction :
Et de cinq ! Après Great Zeppelin (tribute
get there from here", la compil "gallery" et la réédition
Album : Power & the glory - Style : Heavy metal
Axe Killer records continues its owrk of reissuing 80's essential metal albums. Each time, Eric coubard, the owner of the company does a fantastic work : remastering, unreleased tracks, limited edition, deluxe box, 12 pages booklet including new pics, lyrics, Ö It's the same for Saxon which see the reissue of on eof their best album 'Power & the Glory', strictly limited to 3000 copies. The remaster is very good & it gives a clearer sound. Issued in 1983, Saxon has always be compared to Maiden because they started up in the same years. But the min fault of Saxon has certainly be to release more albums than Maiden. In 83, Maiden released its 4th album & Saxon its 6th album. So maybe people was gtiing bored of listening to a new album of Saxon each yersr. Unfortunately, power & the Glory hasn't met the success this album should have get. Delivering a very good metal album sometimes close to power metal, Saxon never failed in this style. The blend of fast paced songs with more melodic ones was one of the most exciting one at this period.
Album : Sahara - Style : Heavy rock
The 90's scene was death metal & heavy rock oriented. House of Lords was one of the best heavy rock bands of this period. This band created by Greg Giuffra (ex-Angel) had one of the most talented line up : chuck Wright (Quiet Riot) on bass, Ken Mary (Alice Cooper) on Drums'Sahara' was realsed in 1990. This album features some special guests like Doug Aldritch (BMR), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Mike Tramp (white lion). Musically speaking, House of Lords is the most ocnvincing band from this period. With a perfect production (9 years later, it still sounds very good!), all musicians has given its best to this album, that's hwy it doesn't sound like obsolete. Melodies are really powerful ('chains of love') & with the fantastic guitar work ofJames Christian, house of Lords didn't fall into sweet songs destined to young children. Of course, this album contains som eballads but it's really not a ballad album. House of Lords combined the strength of hard rock with pop rock melodies . It's definitly efficient. So, give this albuml a new chance.
Album Untied & live - Style : Heavy rock
Axe Killer is not only a label specialised in reissue. This company also sign & produced new album s such as the angels, Whorgasm & Bang Tango. This last one is not really a new band. They started in the 90's & were signed on a major label (MCA) for which they released some of the most explosive heavy rock albums of the 90's. this new one is a live album. For those that haven't ehard abotu Bang Tango, you can imagine it as a blend f Aerosmith, LA Guns & The cult. But facing all Heavy Rock, Bang Tang has something more. They ahve a kind of value added in their music. Drummer & bassist do an excellent & innovatie work which sometimes let us think about fusion parts (Soukl to soul) . This album contains several covers : 20th century boc of T. Rex, Just what I needed of Cars & a Kiss cover 'Stutters' remixed by Die Krupps. This last one sounds very modern. Bang Tango is a groovy heavy rock band with a really good atitude. If you're tired of waiting some news from Guns & Roses, look at there, there's a new & exciting album by Bang Tango.
Album : Alive & Well - Style : Heavy rock
Web : http://www.vegasland.com/QRiot.html
Quiet Riot was a major bands in the 80's with its 2 first albums & two covers : 'Cum on feel the noise' & 'Mama weer all crazee now'. Then, the band decreased 'til the split in the late 80's. In 1999, the original line up is back! Frankie Banalie ( Wasp, ..), Chuck Wright, Rudy Sarzo, Carlos Cavazo & Kevin Du Brow are united again. The result is this new album 'alive & well' issued by Axe Killer records. So, what's new for Quiet Riot? Don't await a musical revolution. Quiet Riot is back to continue releasing heavy rock hymns such as Sign of the times, Metla Health & all these hits of the 80's. More, this new CD contains 6 re-releasing old songs + a cover from AC/DC. So, it's like a new album & a short best of of Quiet Riot. The bonus tracks are their 2 famous cover ( which were each times their most famous hits) mentioned upside, Sign of the times, Metal health, Wild & the young, Ö The new cover is Highway to hell. Quiet Riot ahsn't loose their talent to compose excellent heavy rock songs with totally amazing chorus. This kind of album brings us back to our childhood. It's piece of evidence to say that those that like Quiet Riot in the 80's will be really pleased with this new album. The band now plans an European tour. So, 'cum on feel the noise!
Album : Fils du metal - Style : Heavy metal
Originally issued in 1983, this is maybe the last french metal album sthat was lacking in the reissue campaign leaded by Axe Killer & Brennus records. Satan Jokers was signed on a major label (polygram) & released 3 albums from 1983 to 1986. Their drummer/singer, Renaud hantson continued its carrer as pop rock artist ( he features in Starmania, the famous french rock opera). Satan Jokers was in France a band with the attitude. Reputed as one of the most talented live act, Satan Jokers was maybe leaded by the stronger rythmic sectoin in France. Renaud Hantson is a brilliant drummer ( a fantastic singer & composer) & his friend Laurent Bernat a talented bass player. Both of them evolved in jazz for a while. If you listen to their album carefully, you can see how much complexive was their game (Samouraï). But Satan Jokers cannot be resumed a these 2 guys. With Stephane Bonneau as lead guitarsit (He'll play later in Pink Rose - ex Attentat Rock) & Pierr Guiraud, teh line up of Satan Jokers was close to perfectino. Pierre has got a charismatic vicious voice that typically suits to heavy metal, while Renaud Hantson has a more pop rock voice. The blend of thier 2 voices give contrasted songs which are built on gloomies surroundings. This album, this time again, is remastered & completed with 3 bonus tracks, english versions of Samouraï, Offrande & Fils du Metal. This is the last french heavy metal giant from the 80's that is now reissued.
Albums : trop fou pour toi - Style : Heavy rock
Axe killer gives a lot of pleasure to all 80ís metal fans by releasing this album originally issued in 1984. Signed on a major label, Satan jokers released one year ago, a heavy metal album full on melodies & powerful guitars. On this new album, teh band worked a lot & Satan Jokers found its way. « Trop fou pour toi » is a blend of heavy metal with pop music. On the most aggresive tracks (« pas fréquentables », « Adrien », la Marche Hérétique », ...)Peirre Guiraudís vocals are among the craziest ever made. Heís got a typical heavy metal tune. On more melodic song (« Trop fou pour toi », « Par habitude », ...), Renaud Hantson proves that heís one of teh best meodic singer in the style. The main songs are based into a vocal duet between Pierre & Renaud. A last word, « La Marche hérétique » is robably the first progressive metal song ever composed in France. The fantastic cohesion between drums & bass ( Renaud Hantson again & Laurent Bernat) is absolutly incredible. Their high technical level proved that Satan jokers was the most complete band of that time. Last but not least, this reissue contains the french & english version of the album. 2 ways to be convinced by Satan Jokers.
REVOLUTION HARD ROCK
Label : Axe Killer - Style : various - Album : Sampler Vol1 - Vol 1&2
Hereís a new sampler but this one is released by the french company Axe Killer & it has some particularities. The goal of this sampler is to offer a good view ( the best ones ? ) of the french metal wave of the 80ís. So, this sample ris available in 2 versions. First one contains one CD (Vol1) & 2d one is a 2 CD box set ( Vol 1 + Vol 2).
Vol 1 can be described as the essential to be known regarding to the french metal wave. Itís quite presented as a chronology. It starts with Trust, the famous hard rock band that played several times with their friends AC/DC. Itís a track that were still unreleased thereís 4-5 years even if it was written at their beginning ( end of the 70ís). Itís quite the same for Ocean, a band that appeared in the end of the 70ís & which met a very good success. Ocean is like a cult band in the french scene. Their drummer is very famous , he played later in Trust, Face to Face or Michel Berger ( creator of the famous Starmania !). But these 2 bands are more hard rock bands than heavy metal one. Most of the tracks here are alredy reisued under CD format by various company like Axe Killer for Sortilege, Warning, H Bomb, Ocean, by Brennus records for Killers, Blaspheme, Squealer, High Power, Attentat Rock, by Metal XIII for Vulcain, ADX.
To resume, Sortilege plays high level heavy metal inspired by bands like Judas or Maiden. Their singer, Christian Augustin was often compared to Rob Halford or Geoff Tate. Itís really one of the best bands of the 80ís french metal wave. Their 3 albums are now reissued under CD format. This band gets a huge success in the 80ís & they now prepare their come back !
Warning was the first metal bands of the new wave to be signed on a major. With a high potential of originality, a high pitched singer & top guitar player, Chirstophe Aubert (RIP). H Bomb can be described as the first speed metal band. They appeared in 1983 with a devastating mini LP. They played with the best ( read the interview !) 80ís bands.
Killers is the french veteran of the metal scene. Described as the french Accept because of the voice of their singer, Killers was playing melodic speed metal. The band has just released a fantastic new album 'Fort intérieur '(read their interview !). Blaspheme was really different from the other bands. Playing heavy metal inspired by Iron Maiden, their singer was really different from what it used to be in heavy metal. heís got a pop voice often compared to french singer Daniel Balavoine (RIP). But itís really heavy music played by good musicians.
Squealer has been the good surprise of the 2d half of the 80ís. they appeared with a selfproduced album that litterally impressed all the metal fans in France. Playing some heavy metal inspired as well by Accept & AC/DC, their frontman, Pascal Bailly , has a very specific voice, between Bon Scott & Udo Dirkschneider. In the end of the 80ís , Squealer was the best french bands & the top seller of our scene( read the interview).
High Power was more underground but the success of thier first album allowed them to record the 2d one with the famous producer of Scorpions , Dieter Dierks in the legendary Dierks studio . but due to lack of money, the end of the recording was made in France ; & the band were so diappointed that they splitted up. This 2d album wonít be reissued as the band doesnít want to reissue it. But one track is available in this sampler. A live album recorded in 1986 is also scheduled for 1999 . Musically speaking, High Power was playing pure heavy metal with a lot of dark surroundings & enriched with a charismatic singer (RIP)
Vulcain is with Killers one of the oldest band. But after their new album, the excellent ĎStoppe la Machineí, Vulcain decided to stop its carrer. Described as the french Motorhead due to the voice of their singer, vulcain really blended Motorhead influences with speed metal like Metallica. Lemmy & co really loves this band & theyoffered them in the 80ís to tour with Motorhead. But the band due to a lack of money only made a few dates. They now often played wiht Motorhead in France. Vulcain played too with bands like Chariot, Wasp, Iron Maiden & all major acts of the 80ís.
Another band on this sampler is ADX. ADX is like a cult band too in the french scene & the french audience really supported them a lot. Playing mùelodic speed metal , ADX was a mix of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Helloween & so on. With quality recordings 3 albums & a live album, Noise records proposed them a deal which ends with 'Weird Visions 'their first album sung in english. ADX played with Gamma Ray, ...The band arises again & a new album is soon expected. A 'greatest hits 'has been soon released by Metal XII before the new album 'Resurrection ».
But the interest of this sampler is also some tracks that are still not reissued like Satan Jokers. Created by clever musicians, Satan Jokers was signed on a major label. 2 albums ½ later, the band splitted but they Ďre still in memory. With 2 singers, an aggressive, vicious but melodic voice & one another singer with a soften voice, Satan Jokers was playing heavy pop metal. With an incredible image, Satan Jokersís album are really awaited in CD format.
Presence was more underground but they released a heavy rock album inspired byb th eUS metal scene of 85 with bands like Ratt, Motley Crue. The band created a real sensation & thier mini LP contains also a cover of Led Zeppelin 'Rockíníroll », which is proposed in the 2 CD box set.
Maybe youíve havenít heard about Shakin Street , a band from the end of the 70ís. With a female singer, Fabienne Shine ( that created later the band Shine), Shakin Street released 3 albums for CBS. Thier guitar player was anyone else than Ross Funicello, also known as Ross the Boss, the famous guitar player of Manowar. The band was playing raw hard rock .
Thereís then a track from Attentat Rock. The band started its carrer in the south of France by releasing a rock-hard album. But their evolution was really amazing. The band bursted out in the scene with 'Le Gang des Saigneurs 'that showed impressive heavy metal. Then, they released a new album 'Strike 'sung in english with a new singer (Marc quee, see the interview) & Attentat Rock was really as good as a lot of foreign bands. But due to some problems, the band splitted up & after the departure of their guitar player, Hervé Raynal (ex Face to Face & who will soon release a new album with his new band Smokehouse , read the interview), the band recruited Stephane Bonneau (ex Satan Jokers) & created Pink Rose a glam rock band that issued one album.
The last tittle is coming from Titan which albums are not reissued yet. Titan has been created when Killers plitted up. Bruno Dolheguy was left alone by the band. Bruno continued Killers with new musicians but the 4 other ones created Titan & they made their carrer in parallel with ADX, releasing their first album in 1987 & releasing a live album in the same time of ADXís ones. Titan was really closed to Killers, playing melodic speed metal with this still fascinating voice of their singer. May be more melodic than Killers but really heavy & speed. Titan hasnít been reissued yet but Iím sure that the day will come soon. I hope so !
The 2 CD box set contains another CD with other tracks coming from other albums of Sortilege, Satan JokersWarning, Ocean, H Bomb, Vulcain, High Power. Thereís also a new version of 'Marquis du mal 'from ADX. This 98í version will feature on their new album & itís also now available in their 'greatest hits 'album.
But another interest that can be found in this box set is that some bands, that appeared when the decrease of the french metal scene began, have also one track presented there. Itís a real pleasure to hear songs from Fisc. Their first album was true heavy metal but in the following of their carrer, the band became more melodic & was often compared to a french Def Leppard. They left France to make their carrer in the USA . 4 albums were recorded & i strongly await their reissue.
Mystery Blue is probably one of teh french bands that really get no luck. They appearred with a fantastic first heavy metal album, but with a real bad front cover. With a good singer, great guiatr duets, Mystery Blue recorded 2 albums. The 2d one was more heavy rock. Maybe weíll have the chance to see it reissued soon. But Mysteyr Blue really did its best to relaunch the french scene, trying to tour with Fisc & Fine in the whole France. The band released last year a new selfproduced LP with now a female singer.
Highland Queen & Square were heavy rock bands. The first one released a very good EP & it allowed to discover a great singer. Really inspired by US bands, Highland Queen didn't find a real support to continue its carrer in good conditions. Itís quite the same for Square that appeared in 1985. But their record company didnít make a lot to promote this band.
Then, thereís Voodoo Chile, a good heavy metal band which get not enough promotion & distribution like several french bands.
Lawlesness is older & their album issued in 83 showed an intersting hard rock band. But the band splitted just after the release of their album.
Dygitals , the last band of this sampler , had no luck. They recorded their album in 1988 after 4 demos & after having played with bands like Joshua, Helloween, Chariot, ..But this album hasnít been released. Fortunatly, Brennus records will soon propose it . So, if you donít know the french metal scene, this sampler is undoubtell the best way to discover the main bands that created these scene.
Of course, thereís still some bands that are lacking like Demon Eyes, Epsylon, Voie de Fait, Speed Queen, Stators, Synthese, ..... But thereís enough bands to know that France had & have great & fantastic bands that released amazing albums. There were also a more underground scene with a lot of bands that get an enough potential to 'make something 'into th emetal scene but due to distribution probelsm, labels probelsm & a lack of interest from the french people, the french scene has been like killed . But the thrash metal wave of the 90ís with bands like Loudblast, Massacra to name a few & the rebirth of the heavy metal scene with Manigance, Fifty Ones, Regency, Headline, Folorn Emotion, Artsonic, Watcha & several other bands proves now that french scene is one of the most interesting nowadays. So support & discover the best of the 80ís but donít forget to discover the new promising bands we have.
Style : Heavy metal- Album : Warning II
The 2d album of Warning , originally issued in 1983 is finally out, re-released by Axe Killer. This album is numbered limited (5000 ex) & itís available in 'Warnivision 'with 3d cover & special glasses. After the impressive success of their first album, Warning stayed in all memories . So, teh band wanted to make a special 2d album. & they get all means to create & release their best product . Thatís why, Warning entered the famous Dieter Dierks studio with Dieter himself (Scorpions, ...) & the now famous Mickael Wagener to release the 2d album, simply called Warning II. Of course, knowing that, itís easier to say that some songs & the sound can remain Scorpions but Warning was really not a copy of Scorpions. The band had its own & unique personality, built in the underground before its bursting out in the french metal scene. Thereís some changes in the band & in its music. First Warning was showing a heavy metal band with various infleucnes such as reggae, rock, ...The 2d album of Warning is pure heavy metal. Itís really more aggressive than the first album. Raphaís voice is a bit less melodic & sometimes he really screams & it sounds close to Rob Halford & sometimes Kalus Meine. Rythmic guitars were really heavier too like for the quite speed 'Fire Fire 'but in some songs, Warning renewed with the spirit of their first album like for 'Serie Noire '. Chiristophe Aubert (RIP) , the guitar player showed in this album his incredible feeling that overcome largerly his technical level . As more & more guitar player pass beyond their technical level to the detriment of feeling, Christophe Auberts could have learned them a lot. This album met a very large success as it was certified Gold records with more than 80 000 sells in France. Warning in 2 fantastic albums put its name into the pantheon of the best heavy metal bands & not only in France.
Style Heavy metal- Album : Warning
Here is finally the reissue in CD of one of the best French group of the80s ! Warning is the first group to have means to rival with Trust. Financial means ( with the support of a major) but as well as musical means because this legendary group had fearsome advantage in this period ! An exceptional singer (++Rapha) with a high perched voice and which stays so characteristic, an exceptional guitarist Christophe Aubert (RIP) that has replaced brilliantly Stéphane Bonneau ( Satan Jokers), an inventive and precise rhythmical section. Itís proved by listening to 'Satan Relaps»that has some reggae touches ! Warning is certainly one of the 1st group to to have mixed style like in fusion ! Then, Warning distinguishes equally by a real talent of composition and handwriting. Originally written in English, lyrics have been, by injunction of their record company, translated in French. Then, it is necessary to specify that the sound of this album remainsastonishingly performant, itís a supplementary proof that this group was already in advance in its time. Entirely remastered, Warning holds the comparison with the best current group !Songs as 'Going to USA ', 'New Look 'or again the great slow 'tel que tu líimaginais 'or the reggae - hard 'Satan relaps 'are the vivid proof fo the 'how to know 'and the out norm talent of this fundamental group of the French scene. Impossible to tell to what or to which band Warning can looklike. The group has succeeded to assimilate its influence & then to create its own style, its own universe ! With Soritlege and H Bomb , this album is one of the indispensable and essential reissue
THE ANGELS :
Style Hard rock- Album : Skin & Bones & single Soul Surgeon
Remarked by AC/DC in 75, The Angles has been proposed to tour with them for their Australian tour of 75. In Europe & USA, The Angels is also known under the name of Angel City. With all their album classed in the australian charts, there's several great US bands that now makes cover of this australian band like Great White for example.
The famous The Angels (ex Angelcity) are now back with a new album titled «Skin & bones'! Today, the group is distributed by Axe Killer, a french record company ! What a pleasure to find this band & its music back ! The group is always as good and inspired as it was in its beginning! Their subtle Hard rock, that blends AC/DC & The Rolling Stones, sounds like never it has sounded ! The production is simply perfect and it gives a dimension that the group never had reached ! Hymns chain themselves, all better than the previous ones !. Some songs are more hard rock like 'Skin& bones ', others are more rock like 'Invisible man», some sounds more inspired by blues music like «World stops turning». But sincerely speaking, this album is indispensable for all those who like the hard-rock and the rock in general. 'Souls surgeon 'is a true hit-single in power ! This song is magnificent, very entertaining. It is impossible to not headbang while listening to it ! Never the band has appeared so much inspired & good. It is impossible to feel bored one second to the listening of this musical work of art. The Angels has found again a phenomenal inspiration level. The precision of guitars, the magnificent voice of the singer are supplementary advantages for this unjustly misunderstood group. Then, this return is a true return in force ! A long time in the shade of AC/DC, The angels has more than ever the means to overcome the comparison & to assert itself as an unique band. Here is a future classic of the Rock Hard scene!
Album : Liveline (2CD live) - Style : Hard rock
Last year, The Angles were back with one of their best album to
date : "Skin & bones". Axe Killer continues its work by re-releasing
a new version of the famous "liveline" live album which were only available
in import in Europe. As always, this company never do thigs on its half.
This album has been remastered which gave more strength to guitars &
vocals. With a new booklet containing 32 pages , ton sof new pics, history
of this album, Ö the most interesting surprise is that this live album
is a double one & with 10 more unreleased bonus tracks, recorded from
1981 to 1983. So, among the classical songs : "City out of control", "Marseille",
Ö & 4 tracks that were also issued in 1987 in a special CD edition,
it's 36 live tracks proposed here. So, even if you get the original copy
of this album, this new version of liveline" is totally indispensable.
& for those that never heard a track of this band, this is the perfect
resume to one of the craziness australian band.
Album : Face to Face - Style : Hard Rock
Rate of satisfaction :
Style Heavy metal - Album : All hail to thee / knock Ďem theyíre down
Znowhite was a standard power metal band from Chicago that came out in 1982. The band participated at the volume 3 of Metal Massacre which led them to play with Metallica & Raven during their us tour. Recommende by Johnny Zazula, the recorded their first album in theame studio where Metallica recorded one week before its legendary ĎKillíem allí. Released by Johnny Z ; & Doc mac Ghee ( the same guy tht will work later for Motley Crue or Bon jovi !), their first album get a lot of positive answer form metal medias., that have remaked their powerful rythmic section their female singer & the talents of the guitar parts. Tehn, theu released in 1984 & 1985 the album ĎAll hail to theeí & the EP ĎKickíme when theyíre downí that are now re issued by Axe Killer on one CD. Then, they plaeend to release another album that came to the light in 1988 on Roadrunner records & at this time, the band triied to be more powerful & closer to the thrash wave.
As soon as the first track is played, Znowhite shows a rare intensity for a so young group. Carried out by a singer with a clear voice which can recall per moments the one in the french band Syrens Call, the band started with a great speed song but where the melody is not forsaken. The songs are short (1:40 minutes for ' Saturday night') but are connected at the speed of the flash. The production remained effective in spite of the years. The rhythmic parts are precise and the unit sounds very powerful. The chorus and melodies are well found. The rate/rhythm of the songs nevertheless points out more a boosted Judas priest with some Metallicaís touch although certain parts of guitars are more than aggressive (' Do or die'). But the group could not be prevented from offering us a ballad, benefitting from the clearness of the voice of their singer. For the mini album which follows, the receipts are the same ones, in spite of a production a little deafer and which sometimes made us think about Motorhead. Certain solos seem straight to come out of the guitars of Kirk Hammett or Dave Mustaine. Even 14 years later, this album (or rather these 2 albums) still sounds pleasant when listening to them. Znowhite has to be discovered or has to be rediscovered! But attention, this album as all CD Ďs editions of Axe killer is in limited and numbered edition. Then do not waste time!
H BOMB : ( interview)
Style speed metal
'Attaque' is again a re release of a french metal band from the 80's. H Bomb was playing melodic speed metal in the beginning of this decade, like Metallica ( but not as aggressive than them). In comparison with this band, H Bomb had a better sound on its first mini LP than 'kill 'em all'! But Axe killer has not yet released this album. They prefer to start with the first long album, issued by the band later : 'Attaque'. This album shows a speed metal band with a high potential. songs like 'Exterminateur', 'Gwendoline' are very energetic. & it's still refreshing ! The production was at this time very good. Songs were built on simple riffing parts, with sometimes harmonies, like in Maiden. The singer sings in french & has got aveyr particular voice. It's certainly not the best singer on earth but his voice really suits to this music & it's really an attractive one. As these album were cult one & very hard to find in France, it's really a good idea to offer us in CD format at a reasonable price. this time again, a great effort is made on the quality of the booklet; It's a real pleasure to discover again this excellent speed metal album from the 80's, thanks to Axe killer.
Album : Coup de metal
Here it comes!!! After releasing the first album of H Bomb ( see in the news of last month!) , Axe Killer finally released the first Ep of the band 'Coup de metal' originally released in 1983. As it's only a 30 mintues EP, Axe Killer adds 4 other tracks coming from the 2 picture disc released by the band after their first album ( Attaque) with a new line up.
'Coup de metal' is certainly the best french metal album released in 1983. H Bomb was really excellent with its killer riffs & absolutly fascinating melodies. With this album, H Bomb has created his own style. Playing as fast as Metallica but in a more melodic way, H Bomb released an album that sounds better than 'Kill' em all' ! It's maybe due to the fact that the band only concentrates itself on a few tracks instead of releasing a long album. Best tracks are 'H Bomb', 'Le loup', 'Condamné à mort', 'Coup de metal'. Even in 1998, it sounds good! This album hasn't lost its powerful . It's a real pleasure to discover again & in a CD format all these songs. More, Axe Killer never does things on its half because all booklet of thier productions contains biography of the band, photos, lyrics, & so on. The other tracks of this CD come from 2 pic disc. First one was called 'To feel is pain' & 2d one 'stop th elights'. On this last one, also features a cover of Montrose 'Space Station n°5'. On these tracks, H Bomb changes its line up. They were fed up with their singer & try to evolve in a more commercial way. Lyrincs were also written in english. I think the band lost its soul with these songs. It were very good when it's been released but at this time, it sounds older than the first EP. Strange feeling! Axe Killer has released again something that belongs to the history of french metal. They did it with a lot of attention . If it's indispensable for all 80's french metal fans, this album & its following ones ( H Bomb - Attaque, Sortilege, ....) could certainly convince several metal fans that the french metal scene was one of the most interesting one in the 80's. It's refreshing to hear again all these songs.
Style Heavy metal - Album :Sortilège - Metamorphose - Larmes de Héros - Collector Box set -
Axe Killer was this famous label, that released several metal album 's in the 80's like Ruthless, Black task, Hawai, ...Axe killer has disappeared of teh scene but they're back now! At first, they re released some albums of the 80's in Cd format & they're also released original stuff ( Cage, Whoregasm, ..).
Sortilege is one of the first band re released. This one is maybe the most well known of french bands of the 80's. It's like a cult band. They started their carrer in the beginning of 80. In 83, they released their first mLP, selftittled & originnaly released by Rave on records ( Mercyful Fate first album, H Bomb, ...). it shows a heavy metal band with a good guitarist & a incedible singer, surely the best one that appeared in France & one of the best one worldwide. He's got a voice close to Geoff Tate, Dickinson, Rob Halford. songs deals with heroic story.
in 1984, they released their first long album ( for Devil's record). its name was 'metamorphose'. This album is surely the one that makes them grow in the scene. Even, 14 years later, it still sounds loud & powerful. it's a resume of all the richness of this style : from speed songs( 'd'ailleurs') to splendid dark ballads ( 'Délires d'un fou') , & mid tempos songs ('majesté, cyclopes de l'étang, ...). The potential of the band is showed at its best. it really shows how metal music must sound & be. This 2 first album are now available in Cd format through Axe Killer. it also contains the english version of Metamophose (divided in 2 parts, each one on each album) that has never been released by SPV.
In 1986, Sortilege is back with a new album : 'Larmes de Héros', that shows a different faces of the band. it's less demonstrative. At this time, the band was as good as Queesryche, musically talking. & it's able to compare 'Rage for Order' with Sortilge's last LP. they work a lot to create various surroundings ( Marchands d'hommes') & plays on a more emotionnal way. they all put their attention to the quality of melodies & harmonies. There's a amazing ballad ( Quand un aveugle rêve). But the other songs are really more aggressive. Music is also more complexive. Lyrics of this album are also different from the first LP. It's less heroic or fantasy songs. This CD is also completed with 4 songs of the english version of 'Larmes de Heros') called 'Hero tears'. This english album has been originally released by SPV. One song has become an instrumental. ('Le dernier des rtavaux d'Hercule' - Sagittarius'). if this album would have been released today, it's sure that everybody would have talked about progressive metal band. that's not teh cas, but it really worths to hear all Sortilege album. More, Axe killer does a superb work with very good booklet with biography, new photos, lyrics, ...It's indispensable!!!!!
The band is now a legend in the french scene, but may be with the success of this re release, they could decided to rebirth & record a new album. That's what I strongly hope!
Here is a well good initiative in this fall of 98. Axe Killer can be proud of this collector Boxset and once again their work has been sumptuous. This box set contains the first mini album of Sortilege in their original versions (not remastered as it was on the reissue of this album). Thereís too 3 songs remixed ( rêves díun fou - 2 times, marchands díhommes). 5 other song are coming from the 2d album of Sortilege but delivered here in their English versions. This second album 'heroís tears 'was released in CD by SPV.Remember that Axe Killer had proposed on the 'Larmes de Héros 'reissue a few titles coming from this english CD. Finally, the last title is an unreleased track coming from a demo tape & called 'Reine de Sabbat ». I wonít talk again about the musical qualities of Sortilege , their incredible singer (the French Geoff Tate or Rob Halford, make your own choice !) .Sortilège was out of the common & maybe their unique fault was to be a French band. Iím sure that if this band have grown up in England or Germany, theyíd have had a better career & a better support from fans & medias. This indispensable & limited version Box set (1000 copies left only !) contains equally a T Shirt of 'Metamorphose », the 1st album of the band and thereís also a poster retracing the main important moments of their career. The Booklet is this time again magnificent , with some rare photos . Limited to strictly 1000 copies, all fan of metal ( not only the French ones) has to possess this object of reference . The ideal present for this beginning new year..
Style Heavy - Indus metal - Album : Smothered
Whorgasm is the new sign of french record company Axe Killer. As this label never wants to be kept in only one style of music, Whorgasm is uncomparable with their other bands. Axe Killer is a multi oriented metal company. Whorgasm doesn't play heavy rock no more. This time, it's more powerful. But it's hard to describe this band as it plays a really original music. It can sometimes remains Metallica, sometimes Marylin Manson. their music is really at the cross of theses 2 bands. it's unclassifiable stuff. It's still diversified songs, from very aggressive ('Scream motherfucker') to melodic or ambient songs ('Alladinsane'). Even if some songs are classically played, Whorgasm also uses some samples on several ones . This gives a special surroundings to this album. It makes it sound more unhealthy, more vicious ('Mickael Jackson's sex change'). It's piece of evidence if I add that this production is totally professional & impresses a lot by their arrangements. There's also 2 excellent cover on this album. The first one is a cover from David Bowie. this song is particularly well played & it sounds like a bewitched version. The 2d cover is a classic metal track : Highway star from Deep Purple. This version has been quite well accelerated & played in a heavy metal feeling. If I say that Lemmy from Motorhead said that Whorgasm is highly recommandable for metal freaks, i think that it will convince you to get rapidly this extraordinary album!
Style Heavy rock- Album :Cage
Here's the new release from french record company Axe Killer. restarting with re releases of 80's standard album in CD format, the label continues with new acts such as Cage or Whoregasm. For Cage, this band is really one of the most exciting new US metal band that has just come from the metal scene. It's truly brilliant. But theres some reason for this. Cage is the new project of ex XYZ - french-members ( which albums & first EP has just also bee re released by Axe Killer) . this album givees teh will to hear again more US bands. Just like Stream ( from Brennus reocrds), there's absolutly no weaknesse in this album : the production is excellent, musician are talentuous, songs are really good. By some side, Cage remains me bands like White Lion, surely because of the voice of their singer. He's got something in his voice that makes songs essential. Like often in this style of music, Cage brings a lot of attention to the qualityof their melodies like in the bonus track sung in french. The band diversifies a lot its music, so it's never boring. 'Walk on Water', 'Save me ' or 'Here & gone' are really entertaining stuffs. It's impossible to stay insensible to theses songs. With this album, Cage proves that Heavy rock has still a lot to offer in the scene, provided it's played by skilled & honest musicians that give their best to songs. For a return, Axe Killler finds again ( like in the 80's) some amazing bands. I hope this will continue for a long time!
Style Heavy metal - Album : Forged in Fire
Anvil comes from Toronto. the band has released several album . Axe Killer, the french company re issued 'Forged in Fire', their 1983 album. At this time, Anvil was maybe oen of the most exciting band appearing into the metal scene with Metallica. Anvil can be compared to bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest ( a lot!) & Scorpions. In fact, Anvil blends the various elements that belongs to the band i mentioned with some new ones that will be later developped by Metallica ( like fast guitar riffs for example). Lips, the singer, try to create some vocals line like Rob Halford on some furious songs. His voice is more aggressive & it gives liek a 'thrash metal ' tone (in a way like Thrash metal was in the 80's) to the music. Guitars still stays melodic but can also be very aggressive. On some songs, Anvil shows a more commercial face ( with songs that could have been played by Scorpions, including a huge vocal effort by Lips). It's certainly not the most interesting aspect of the band, but it proves that Anvil is able to evolve in different directions. 'Forged in fire' really comes off like a crushing & devastating album . If you like true heavy metal , 'Forged in Fire' will absolutly suit in your discography. It's probably an album that has to be re-discovered. its Cd version also contains an excellent booklet with rare pics ( like always for Axe Killer!)
Style Thrash metal - Album : Fear of tomorrow
Artillery os certainly an unlucky band. This danish band had released 2 albums but had never reached a level of fame that leaded record company to give them enough money & means to go on a higher step. . Fear of Tommorow is their first album issued in 1986. One year later they will released a 2d album called 'Terror Squad'. By now, Axe Killer jhas just re issued their first album. First impression is that the sound is now quite old but powerful of the band is still here. It's raw & wild. Artillery presented with this album some qualities that should have made them become oen of the most famous thrash power metal band of the 80's. Furious riffing parts that never denied some more technical approaches ( show your hate for example), rumbling drums are not only what is proposed in songs. It's not always fast tracks, there's a lot of variation & very good break parts. More, their singer has got a raw voice that can also be sometimes more melodic. So, Artillery develops in this album some elements that will be found later in bands like Destiny for example. The potential of Artillery seemed important & it's really a pity to see this wasted by a 'chilly' record company.
Style Thrash metal - Album : Terror Squad
Axe Killer reissues here the 2nd album of Artillery, called ' Terror squad'. If like a lot of people, you passed your childhood with groups like Testament, Overkill, Exodus, Forbidden and other thrash group of the bay area, you will be filled by this album. Because it is quite simply irreproachable, as well in the form as in the content. Precision of the rhythmics, demoniac riffs, audible and varied singer, ragor but, energy of the low register to acute, gigantic production... all in this album points out to us the great time of the ' Bay Area' thrash. Except that Artillery is not an American but rather a Swedish group. But, one does not lose there with the exchange. Then, if you want to live again during a few moments this period or if you wish to discover what was metal music a few years ago, Artillery is without any doubt the group that you need and this album is a pearl in the kind. It is a pity that this album could not obtain in 1987 the success that it deserved.. But today, this error can be repaired. Really not sounding like an obsolete group, Artillery can following the example that Imagika does, reminded us what was the thrash metalin the mid 80ís. We will still take a lot of pleasure, provided that the musicians are inspired! It is the case for this album then do not hesitate more
Style Thrash metal - Album : Brutal Destruction
Cyclone was a belgian band that appears in the 80's. Formerly known under the name of Centurion, the band changed its name & made its music more aggressive. Influenced by the new ave of British heavy metal with bands like Diamond Head, Blitzkrieg, Cyclone recorded in 1986 a fantastic thrash metal album that has get a huge success in Europe with more than 30 000 copies sold. Unfortunately, the band hasn't follow its carrer after this fisrt one despite having played as open act with bands like Metallica, Slayer or Helloween. If you 've discovered Metallica in 1983 & all the following bands evolving in what has been called the Bay Area thrash metal scene, Cyclone will surely remains you some good remembrance & good feeling. Now, new bands like the excellent Imagika still proposes excellent bay area thrash metal albums & this album of Cyclone can easily satisfy all this scene. This album originally issued in 1986 still sounds very refreshing. There's amazing speed riffs with a good vocalist that screams & sometimes reaches higher tone like Tom Arraya of Slayer does for example. But this singer will surely most remains Bobby 'Blitz' fom Overkill. Cyclone will make you think at young Metallica , with some Heathen, Helloweeen or Overkill touches. It's terribly powerful with a few melodies that stay in mind easily. 'Brutal destruction' is a perfect album for headbanging. It's excellent& it 's really not old fashioned!
Style Thrash metal - Album : Eternal devastation
At the beginning of the thrash metal scene ( also described as the death metal one), the german scene was one of the most promising one with bands like Kreator & Destruction. Destruction appears in 1983& started its carreer with 'Sentence of Death', a mini LP that went into a revelation into the metal scene. Rarely a band was able to be as extreme as Destruction excepted Slayer! It was also the first thrash metal album released on a 48 tracks studio. In 1985, 'Infernal Overkill' , their 2d album is released & then came 'Eternal devastation' in 88. This album has now been re issued by Axe Killer records in Cd format & remastered. The main difference between Destruction & the other thrash metal bands is certainly their up to the average technical level. Destruction could easily have been classified under the stamp of Techno thrash metal. The work of guitars is really impressive. It sounds very brutal , with just enough melodies. Another element that make Destruction different of the other thrash metal bands is their sound. Destruction has never sounded like anyone & no bands succeeded in getting the smae sound. You can recognize the band through their sound. There's not a lot of bands able to do this. Musically speaking, this album can be compared to what Exodus made on its first album but with more classical influenced solis ( like in 'Life without sense' or 'United by Hatred'). Even the voice can sometimes be the same : it's high screamed voice on furious rythmic parts. 10 years later, this album hasn't lost its force.
MAD MAX :
Style Heavy metal - Album : Stormchild
Mad Max is a german band that appears in the 80's. After a first album where the band built its basis, they changed their line up : a new singer, more imaginative & with a better charisma enters the band. Then, they released 'Stormchild' in 1985. This album is now re issued by Axe Killer & it's probably the best way to discover this band that has never met the success they should have had. REcorded by Kalle Trapp & Karo studio, the sound was really good. The band evolves between loud & fast heavy metal ( 'stormchild' for example ) & more melodic songs. There's only one ballad ( Voices in teh noght) , so the main songs remains powerful. With a powerful & brilliant singer, Mad Max plays good songs in a really melodic vein. Those who like bands like Snailbooster ( now Syrens Call), Dokken or Sortilege ( their last album ) wiil surely be convinced by Mad Max. The whole songs are perfectly played & composed with alternance of 'aggressive' songs (Run for the night), melodic one ( Lonely is the hunter) that make a really diversified album. The main quality found in german bands can also be found in Mad Max. It's relly surprising to see that Mad Max has not bursted out in th emetal scene in the 80's. Maybe it's due to the fact that hte whole german bands were playing speed or thrash metal. With the increase of the melodic & prog metal scene, Mad Max can be a good album to hear despite it's a 13 years old album.
