The captherm is a sensor that can measure the heat or radiant flow in extreme conditions. With a water cooled system and with its air-wall on its surface it can bear the highest temperatures and all types of projections. Its exit is a proportional tension to the flux measured.

Operating principle:

The instrument is constructed in two parts comprising a thin foil heat flux sensor and the cooling water heat sink. The heat flux absorbed at the sensor surface is transferred to the heat sink which remains at a temperature below that of the sensor surface. Since the conductive heat transfer inside the heat flux sensor thickness is proportional to the heat absorbed by the sensor surface, the sensitive element provides a self generated emf proportional to the heat transfer rate. This emf is produced directly between the two output leads and no reference junction is needed.
When fitted with a sapphire window, the instrument can be made insensitive to convection transfer and then sense only the radiant component of the heat flux. The captherm can be sized and shaped on request or conditioned for specific applications.

Advantage:
Conditions: permit to measure heat flow under extreme conditions, like high temperature, projections or deposits.
Precision: the sensitivity is not temperature dependent, so it is not affected by water temperature changes. The error percentage is inferior at 2%, the response time is < 0,2 second with a linear output of 100µV for each 1 kW/ m2.
Flexibility: the sensor can be adapted to measure radiant flow or heat flow. Furthermore, the captherm is available in form of cylinders or rectangular bars or other custom made form.
If the intensity range of the source change, there's no need to change the sensitive element.

Applications:

Total and radiant flux measurement with source of intense heat (laser, explosion…)
Process control (under extreme conditions)(glassmaking, flames, oven)
